A newly completed 272.8-linear meter slope protection structure in Baseco, Port Area, Manila, is expected to reinforce flood defenses and safeguard residents from river overflow, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Friday, Mar. 28.
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) Director Loreta M. Malaluan, said the P96.49-million project strengthens Baseco’s flood control system, complementing three earlier phases completed last year and in the early months of this year.
Malaluan said the fourth phase of the project, constructed from May 2024 to January 2025, serves as a protective barrier against flooding while preventing soil erosion and improving water quality.
Designed to mitigate risks from rising water levels, particularly during heavy rains and high tides, the reinforced riverbank structure is part of DPWH’s broader flood control efforts in one of Manila’s most flood-prone communities.
With its proximity to Manila Bay and the Pasig River, Baseco remains vulnerable to tidal surges and storm-induced flooding, prompting DPWH to implement a multi-phase riverbank protection initiative.
The first three phases of the project were completed with a total investment of P285.34 million, while three additional phases are scheduled for implementation under the 2025 General Appropriations Act.
Once fully completed, the project is expected to provide long-term flood mitigation and greater protection for Baseco residents.
