Renewable energy (RE) firm Alternergy Holdings Corp. announced that its wind subsidiary has gained an award from the Department of Energy (DOE), which would help push through its wind energy development in Albay.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Thursday, March 27, it said Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. (AWHC) has been awarded with a certificate of authority (COA) to undertake exploration and wind assessment activities in pursuant of the Albay wind power project, which will span across several municipalities in the province.
Under the certificate, AWHC will be permitted to conduct the necessary feasibility studies, along with permitting processing with government agencies in a three-year term.
Once the project is deemed commercially viable, the COA will be converted into a 25-year wind energy service contract.
The project is anticipated to bring in 150-megawatts (MW) worth of wind capacity, and would take up 6,318 hectares (ha) of land in Albay.
According to Alternergy, the initial plans stemmed from participating in the Albay Renewable Energy and Investment Summit in September 2024.
Knud Hedeager, president of AWHC, expressed gratitude to the DOE for its approval, which would help build more wind developments in Luzon.
“The COA framework is a landmark policy initiative by the current DOE under Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla. It supports developers from the onset, thereby helping mitigate project risks and enhance overall project viability,” he said.
“This is an exciting time for us as we are set to complete construction of our Tanay and Alabat wind power projects this year, after which Alternergy will be moving forward with developing new wind projects,” Hedeager added.
Aside from its pre-development works in Albay, the firm is also constructing two wind projects in Tanay, Rizal and Alabat, Quezon.
In 2005, Alternergy co-developed Bangui Bay wind farm—the first in the Philippines and throughout Southeast Asia.
Currently, Alternergy’s portfolio focuses on various RE projects, such as wind, run-of-river hydropower, solar farm, commercial rooftop, battery storage, and offshore wind projects, with plans to develop 500-MW worth of new projects in the next two years.
