Administration senatorial candidate Benhur Abalos can't help but be mesmerized along wirh the rest the country by tennis phenom Alexandra "Alex" Eala's epic run in the ongoing 2025 Miami Open.

Abalos congratulated Eala for her entry into the semi-finals of the tournament, which he called a "proud moment for the nation".

"Congratulations, Alex! Isa kang tunay na inspirasyon sa bawat Pilipino, lalo na sa kabataang atleta (You're an inspiration to every Filipino, especially to young athletes). Your determination, discipline, and passion have brought pride and honor to our country," Abalos said.

The 19-year-old tennis sensation upset world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in straight sets to punch her ticket to the semis.

"Alex's victory reminds us of the vast potential of Filipino athletes when given the right support. We should enact laws that nurture our athletes from the grassroots to the global stage," said Abalos, a member of the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate.

Abalos also wished Eala continued success in her upcoming matches.

Abalos, who served three terms as mayor of Mandaluyong City, launched the "Batang Mandaleño" Sports Development Program, which provided grassroots training, local competitions, and scholarships for student-athletes.

He also prioritized the improvement of public sports facilities and integrated sports development with educational and anti-drug initiatives.

"Sports not only build champions but also shape character. Grassroots sports programs are essential for youth empowerment, crime prevention, and national pride," he said.
