Elago tells VP Duterte to drop spokesperson gig for dad, face confidential funds issue

For Gabriela Party-list nominee Sarah Elago, Vice President Sara Duterte should stop acting as former president Rodrigo Duterte spokesperson, especially since she has more important things to attend to at home.

The impeached Vice President Duterte is currently at The Hague in the Netherlands, where the International Criminal Court (ICC) is located. The elder Duterte is being detained and tried by the ICC.

"Imbis na mag-ala-spokesperson kay former president Duterte, ang dapat gawin ni VP Sara ay harapin ang mga panibagong ebidensya laban sa kanya hinggil sa paggamit niya ng confidential funds," Elago said in a statement Monday, March 24.

(Instead of acting as spokesperson of former president Duterte, what VP Sara should do is face the new evidence against her on her usage of confidential funds.)

In recent weeks, members of the House majority bloc have highlighted the discovery of more supposedly fake names on Vice President Duterte's list of confidential fund beneficiaries.

These absurd-sounding names include "Amoy Liu", “Fernan Amuy”, “Joug De Asim", “Renan Piatos", “Pia Piatos-Lim", “Xiaome Ocho", “Jay Kamote", and “Miggy Mango".

Last year, the alleged confidential fund recipient “Mary Grace Piattos" grabbed headlines and later symbolized the questionable nature of the usage of P612.5-million secret funds that were allocated to the offices linked to the Vice President.

This alleged misuse of millions worth of public funds partly fueled the House of Representatives' impeachment of the second highest-ranked official of the land.

Vice President Duterte's Senate impeachment trial is expected to begin in earnest in July.

The elder Duterte is facing charges of crimes against humanity in connection with his bloody war on drugs.
