Fugitive nabbed after 23 years


BACOLOD CITY – A 46-year-old laborer was arrested in Sitio Bunga, Barangay Quintin Remo, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, on Saturday, March 22, 23 years after escaping from the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Police Major Romulo Gepilango, Moises Padilla police chief, said that the fugitive, Niño, was apprehended by lawmen while working in a sugarcane field.

Gepilango said that Niño, serving a sentence for theft, fled on Sept. 9, 2002. 

He said that the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) coordinated with the Negros Occidental Provincial Intelligence Unit which tracked the escapee in his hometown.

Niño’s arrest warrant was issued by the Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Regional Trial Court Branch 60 on June 8, 2000.

Gepilango said that Niño will be transported back to Palawan to resume serving his sentence.
