Baguio eyes parking buildings  as solution to traffic problems


BAGUIO CITY – The city government sees parking buildings as a solution to traffic problems being experienced here.

City Administrator Engr. Bonifacio dela Pena, speaking at the Baguio Traffic and Transport Summit at the Baguio Convention Center on March 20, said the first floor of the three-story Youth Convergence Center near the Athletic Bowl under construction will be used as a parking area with a total of 108 slots for cars and 80 for motorcycles, including Persons of Disability parking. 

A tennis court under construction has 89 parking slots below.

Dela Pena added that the proposed multi-level parking building in Camp Allen, which will house the Bureau of Fire Protection and will help reduce parking inside and outside the city hall and the Baguio City Police Office. The city has allocated P400 million for the Camp Allen parking building.

“City fire trucks will still occupy  the first floor, while the rest will be spread out in different areas. Also, the Camp Allen parking site will house Baguio City Medical Service and for commercial purposes, while the parking lots will be on the next floors,” Dela Pena said.

A multi-level parking building is also being eyed on Leonard Wood Road near the Botanical Garden under a Public Partnership Project (PPP).

Another proposed location is the old auditorium and  Burnham Park where a parking area is located and planned to be converted into a multi-level commercial and parking building.

The old auditorium parking building will be constructed under a P1.6-billion PPP project.

Other proposed areas are Victory Liner and DPS Compound and GSIS lots beside Baguio Convention Center and a private individual has offered a parking area on Bokawkan Road in front of Toyota Baguio.
