For some years, there have been a few favorites when it comes to luxury vans. Even without naming names, many of you can already guess which ones they are. Granted, they’re great cars, but with many rediscovering their benefits over large SUVs, the long lines for these models may put a few buyers off.
Thankfully, there’s a new contender, and it’s certainly calling into question whether the premium these favorites charge (and the waiting list) is worth it. That new contender is the GAC M8, particularly in GX Master trim.
Art of arrival
Few cars make an event out of their arrival like the M8. Its towering chrome grille, bright LED running lamps, and center caps that always stay upright (Rolls-Royce style) broadcast that this is more than your average van. Its sliding doors open electronically, puddle lamps illuminate and interior LED strips light up the cabin when alighting.
First class comfort
There’s no better way to depart either. Stepping inside the GAC M8 feels more like boarding a plane that regular ground transport. Soundproof windows muffle all noises from outside while window shades can be raised on the second and third rows for privacy.
The M8 Master pampers with truly luxurious seats on the second row. These chairs come with their own armrests, ottoman, and even tray tables. Controls on the side make it easy to adjust to the perfect position. It even comes with seat ventilation, heating and massage functions. A panoramic roof above can show the night sky, or the mood can be set with multi-color LED ambient lighting. Behind is a third row bench that also offers armrests, cupholders, and USB ports for charging.
Unparalleled convenience
The perks aren’t limited to the second row passengers. The M8 makes every aspect of the journey effortless. When approaching the car, no need to even fumble for the keys. Its passive keyless entry system unlocks the car the moment you approach. Like we mentioned, both sliding doors are power assisted. Yet so too is the tailgate, making loading luggage just as easy. Find your legroom lacking? The front passenger seat can be adjusted from behind with easy to reach buttons.
For the designated driver, managing this vehicle is made easy as well. The M8 Master is fitted with a surround view camera system giving excellent views of all sides of the car. It also has a Fusion Automatic Parking Assist (FAPA) to automate the process. The electronic parking brake also has an auto hold function for stop and go traffic. Hill-start hold and hill descent control are also fitted for steep parking ramps. Even a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is fitted for the driver’s convenience. At night and in inclement weather, its LED headlights automatically adjust the height and beam to see around corners. Wipers are also automatic. On the highway, the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system helps maintain a safe distance and speed to the car ahead. It also works at slow speeds thanks to the Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) feature.
Entertainment options
Keeping the passengers occupied on the trip is easy thanks to built-in smartphone connectivity suite. The 14.6 inch touchscreen supports smartphone connection and channels sound through its eight-speaker audio system.
Even the kids will find the car quite cool as it comes with a built-in light and sound show that can be activated when the vehicle is parked. Simple select from one of the several preset tunes and the car will ‘perform,’ flashing the lights in tune with the sound.
Potent power
It might look like a heavyweight, but the M8 is quite zippy thanks to the 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that puts out 252-horsepower and 400-Nm of torque. All that power is sent to the front wheels via a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with selectable drive modes to tap its power, efficiency or a balance of both, depending on the drive.
Top-notch safety
Of course, the M8 also makes safety a priority. Besides the expected ABS, stability control, traction control, and airbags, the M8 also throws in airbags at the back window for added protection in rear-end collisions.
It also has Advanced Driving Assist Systems (ADAS) like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Surprising value
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of all is the GAC M8’s price. It starts at P2,998,000 for the entry trim, while the top-of-the-line GX Master, is what we recommend at P3,948,000. Both models are covered by a five-year, 150,000-km warranty. Best of all, the wait time to receive your vehicle is dramatically shorter than its competitors.
Many new brands typically struggle to topple the incumbent favorites. Yet the GAC M8 Master will have you questioning why you’ve never considered it before.
