A 42-year-old pick-up truck driver was shot to death allegedly by a police officer in a road rage incident in Tandang Sora, Quezon City, on Thursday night, March 20.
According to the police report, the pick-up truck was passing along Tandang Sora going to Marilao, Bulacan when it collided with a white van.
The van driver allegedly got out, punched, and opened fire on the pickup driver who crashed into the concrete barricades.
“Sinuntok po niya yung driver namin, may dala na po siyang baril sabay po putok hindi na po nakapalag inubos na po lahat ng bala (He punched our driver, he was carrying a gun and fired at once, he couldn't stop, he had used up all the bullets),” a witness said.
The victim was immediately brought to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival while the passenger of the pick-up truck sustained injuries.
After the incident, the suspect, reportedly a police sergeant, 48 years old, surrendered to the Batasan Police Station. He was turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) in Camp Karingal.
As of this posting, the QCPD has yet to release a statement on the incident.
The QCPD expressed their condolences to the bereaved family of the victim.
“Ang Quezon City Police District (QCPD) ay taos-pusong nakikiramay sa pamilya ng nasawi at sa sugatang biktima matapos ang isang insidente ng road rage na naganap kagabi (The Quezon City Police District expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and the injured victim following a road rage incident that occurred last night),” it said in a statement.
The police assured that they will be transparent in the investigation even if the suspect is a police officer.
“Tinitiyak ng QCPD ang isang patas, masusi, at transparent na imbestigasyon upang matiyak na mabibigyan ng hustisya ang mga biktima (QCPD ensured a fair, thorough, and transparent investigation to ensure justice is served to the victim),” it said.
“Bagaman isang miyembro ng pulisya ang sangkot, hindi kinukunsinti ng QCPD ang anumang maling gawain at tinitiyak na haharap ang naturang pulis sa patas at naaangkop na proseso ng batas (Although a police officer was involved, the QCPD does not tolerate any wrongdoing and ensures that the officer in question will face fair and appropriate legal process),” it added.
