The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned on Thursday, March 20 that rains from the shear line and northeast monsoon could cause flash floods or landslides in various parts of the country.
The shear line—a weather system formed by the collision of cold winds from the northeast monsoon (amihan) and warm breezes from the Pacific Ocean (easterlies)—will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms to the Visayas, Caraga, Sorsogon, and Masbate over the next 24 hours.
PAGASA weather specialist Rhea Torres said the shear line could continue to bring rain to parts of Bicol Region and the Visayas until the weekend.
Over the next 24 hours, the amihan will also bring cloudy skies and rains to Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Aurora, Quezon, and the rest of Bicol Region.
PAGASA also noted that the effects of the amihan will gradually weaken.
“Although the northeast monsoon is still present, we are approaching its imminent termination. This may be the last surge of the amihan," said PAGASA's Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section Chief Ana Liza Solis.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the amihan.
The rest of the country will experience generally fair weather, with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies.
