12 energy projects cleared for system impact study

The Department of Energy (DOE) has issued system impact studies (SIS) to 12 energy projects in February.

The DOE is set to endorse these projects to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to assess whether the power grid can accommodate the additional capacity. If not, NGCP will determine if any refurbishments are needed for its transmission lines, transformers, or substations.

According to the DOE, 11 renewable energy (RE) projects are granted with a grid impact study, while one is an energy storage system (ESS).

The projects granted SIS with the largest capacity this month are the 300-megawatt (MW) Sebaste offshore wind farm in Aklan and Panay wind power project in Antique.

Other projects with a similar 100 MW capacity include Mauban offshore wind farm in Quezon, Capalonga offshore wind farm in Camarines Norte, Mariveles offshore wind farm in Bataan, Mercedes offshore wind farm in Camarines Norte, and Dumaguete offshore wind farm in Negros Oriental.

The 60-MW Sambong onshore wind farm in Batangas also received an SIS endorsement, along with the 30-MW Dapdap east wind farm in Talisay, Batangas.

Camarines Sur CW wind power project, which has a 45 MW capacity, also received the DOE’s endorsement to NGCP.

The only solar project granted with a grid impact study is Jasaan solar power project with 68 megawatts direct current (MWdc), while Binga battery energy storage system (BESS) phase 2 is the only energy storage project that was given an SIS.
