In the bustling world of skincare, where new ingredients and technologies emerge daily, one ancient botanical is quietly revolutionizing how we approach aging: Camellia. While trends come and go, Camellia's enduring legacy, amplified by cutting-edge science, makes it a must-have for anyone serious about skin health. With its proven effectiveness combined with the power of science, more and more premium skincare brands are using camellia in their products from Shiseido and Chanel to Aesop.

Just recently, the cult-favorite Japanese skincare Shiseido has introduced the reformulation of its iconic Ultimune Power Serum and has put Camellia center stage. In an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Shiseido Philippines marketing manager, Sadie Hwang, has shed light on why skincare enthusiasts should now turn their attention to camellia for a slow aging regimen.

"This new Ultime is the culmination of over 30 years of research," she explains. “It's driven by our groundbreaking discovery of Memory T cells, or CD4 CTL, which play a crucial role in skin regeneration."
The numbers speak for themselves. Based on the brand’s study, the reformulated serum boasts Power Fermented Camellia+, a patented technology, quadruples skin regeneration and slashes aging factors by over 50 percent. Compared to its predecessors, this version goes beyond surface-level improvements, diving deep to strengthen the skin's moisture barrier and enhance its innate resilience.

"We wanted to address the root causes of aging, not just the visible signs," Sadie shares. "Users can expect to see a significant reduction in dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles within four weeks. Beyond that, they'll experience a dramatic boost in radiance, firmness, and smoothness."
The inspiration for this leap forward comes from a fusion of cutting-edge science and time-honored tradition. Shiseido's researchers delved into the intricacies of Memory T cells while drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese ki-koji fermentation techniques. This marriage of old and new led to the development of Power Fermented Camellia+, a process that amplifies the inherent benefits of camellia extract.

"Camellia is a remarkable ingredient," she emphasizes. "It's rich in antioxidants, provides deep hydration, and strengthens the skin barrier. We utilize virtually every part of the plant—seeds, leaves, flowers, and oil – to maximize its efficacy."

The seeds, in particular, undergo a transformative fermentation process. "We upcycle the strained lees, ensuring minimal waste and maximum benefits," she notes. This commitment to sustainability is further underscored by Shiseido's sourcing practices. "Our camellia comes from Gotoh Island, where it thrives in harsh conditions, building its resilience. We also use FSC-certified paper for packaging and incorporate recycled materials."

But what makes camellia stand out in a sea of botanical ingredients? She points to its versatility and unique amino acid profile. "It's suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. While it shares some similarities with other botanicals like green tea, the fermentation process significantly enhances its anti-aging and barrier repair capabilities."

The camellia's antioxidant properties shield the skin from environmental stressors, while its moisturizing effects combat dryness and improve moisture retention. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritation, and its emollient effects soften and smooth the skin.

From ancient wisdom to modern science, Camellia stands as a testament to natural efficacy. In a world saturated with skincare promises, it stands out as a beacon of scientific innovation. If you're looking for a skincare ingredient that delivers real, lasting results, it’s maybe time for you to test the power of camellia.
