Philippines charts course for sustainable aviation fuel dominance

In a statement, the DOTr said the country has sufficient agricultural waste feedstock to produce SAF given its large agriculture industry.

With the goal of producing SAF in the country, the agency is actively seeking more collaborations with stakeholders in the aviation industry.

“By fostering innovation and partnerships, we are paving the way for the Philippines to become a leader in SAF production and usage,” it said.

So far, the DOTr stated that it is partnering with United States-based aerospace company Boeing to pursue the development of SAF.

Boeing, which has a longstanding relationship with the Philippines and its aerospace industry, said working with the DOTr aligns with the company’s goal of advancing aviation decarbonization.

“We’re committed to continuing our work with the [DOTr] and multi-industry partners to accelerate aviation decarbonization and capacity building locally,” said Boeing Southeast Asia President Penny Burtt.

Last year, the DOTr also collaborated with France-based aerospace company Airbus to conduct a feasibility study on SAF.

The findings of this study would serve as a basis for developing future policies to support SAF production in the country.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), SAF is a liquid fuel used in commercial aviation that has the potential to lower CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.

It can be produced from a number of agricultural waste feedstock, including waste oil and fats, green and municipal waste, and non-food crops.

A recent study by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) found that Southeast Asia’s feedstocks can supply approximately 12 percent of global SAF demand to meet the commercial aviation industry’s net-zero goal by 2050.

It added that the total feedstock availability of the Philippines and neighboring countries Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia accounts for about 90 percent of the region’s SAF supply capacity.
