"Crazy Rich Asians" will make a comeback, although not in the way initially anticipated. Max is set to develop a television series adapted from Kevin Kwan's trilogy of novels.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Jon M. Chu, who directed the 2018 film, and Adele Lim, a co-writer of the film, are involved in this new project.

The future of "Crazy Rich Asians" has been uncertain for years. After the 2018 film, which starred Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu, and Henry Golding and grossed $240 million at the global box office, a sequel seemed inevitable.

Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed that a sequel, based on the novel "China Rich Girlfriend," was in development just weeks after the film's opening.

However, scheduling conflicts and Lim's eventual departure stalled development, as did Chu's significant commitment to directing Wicked and its upcoming conclusion, Wicked: For Good.

Kwan's novels center around Rachel Chu, an Asian American woman who meets her boyfriend's incredibly wealthy family from Singapore. This leads to a series of humorous events.

The central couple is played by Constance Wu and Henry Golding, with a star-studded cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and Ronny Chieng.

HBO chief Casey Bloys first hinted at a Crazy Rich Asians series in 2024, announcing that the Warner Bros. Discovery property is being developed for a format other than a film. He did not mention if Jon M. Chu and Kevin Kwan would be involved, although Kwan's potential return to the franchise is particularly noteworthy.
