The San Juan City local government inaugurated a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Sub-Station in the city and broke ground for a linear park on Wednesday, March 19.
Mayor Francis Zamora recently inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the PCG for the Sub-Station located along F. Manalo Street in Barangay Batis. He was joined by PCG Commodore Christopher Meñado and other local and PCG officials during the inauguration.
“We are proud to strengthen our partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard through the inauguration of their sub-station here in San Juan. The Coast Guard has always been a critical partner in our city, particularly during typhoons and flood-related emergencies. Their presence in San Juan will ensure faster, more effective responses to maritime and water-related emergencies, ultimately safeguarding our residents, especially those in flood-prone areas. This sub-station is an important milestone in our commitment to community safety and disaster resilience," the mayor said.
The sub-station will also play a vital role in flood risk management, disaster coordination, and emergency preparedness along the city’s waterways.
On the other hand, the linear park, to be built in partnership with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Barangay Batis, is part of the Neighborhood Upgrading Project with Nature-Based Solutions along the San Juan River Easement project, aimed at revitalizing underutilized spaces and transforming them into a vibrant, community-driven park.

The groundbreaking was led by Zamora, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, MMDA Deputy Chairman Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr., MMDA General Manager Undersecretary Procopio Lipana, MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Assistant Secretary David Angelo Vargas, Rep. Bel Zamora, members of the San Juan City Council headed by Vice Mayor Angelo Agcaoili, and Barangay Batis Chairman Dino Geneston.
The linear park will integrate features such as vertical gardens, rainwater harvesting systems, cisterns, rain gardens, and community pavilions.
Designed to enhance environmental sustainability, this initiative utilizes nature-based solutions to improve waterway easements while providing green, eco-friendly spaces for social interaction, recreation, and environmental education.
“We are proud to be part of this transformative project that will benefit not only the residents of San Juan but also the entire Metro Manila community. The San Juan City Linear Park is a perfect example of how we can integrate nature into urban spaces. This project is a significant step towards creating more sustainable, green spaces that promote environmental consciousness and provide our residents with a healthy place to gather, relax, and connect with nature. It reflects our commitment to improving the quality of life in San Juan while addressing climate change and enhancing our city’s beauty," Zamora said.
San Juan River is one of the main river systems in Metro Manila and is a major tributary of the Pasig River. It begins near La Mesa Dam as the San Francisco del Monte River, which officially takes the name of San Juan River when it meets with Mariblo Creek in Quezon City.
It passes through Quezon City, San Juan, the Manila district of Santa Mesa and Santa Ana, and Mandaluyong.
The city government also regularly conducts cleaning, dredging, desilting, and desludging operations to ensure the cleanliness of the river and boost San Juaneños' awareness of the importance of the river and its tributaries.
