PetroGreen installs 40 MW solar project in Isabela

Yuchengco-led PetroGreen Energy Corp. (PGEC) reported that its subsidiary BKS Green Energy Corp. is set to bring additional renewable energy (RE) to the Luzon grid by breaking ground on its solar project in Isabela.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Tuesday, March 18, PGEC said BKS began construction of its 40-megawatt direct current (MWdc) Limbauan solar power project (LSPP) in San Pablo, Isabela, which would generate around 59 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy per year once operational.

According to PGEC, solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturer Trina Solar has supplied 52,640 panels for the project, as developments will be set in two phases.

Phase one will deliver six MWdc, which will be linked to the Isabela II Electric Cooperative (ISELCO II) system. The second phase, or LSPP-2, will add 34 MWdc and will be connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) 69-kilovolt (kV) Tuguegarao-Cabagan line through a 4.73-kilometer (km) dedicated transmission facility.

Once these phases have materialized, PGEC expects this solar system to power approximately 33,000 households, as well as minimize about 31,700 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Maria Victoria Olivar, PGEC’s vice president for business development and commercial operations, highlighted that this project would also benefit the area’s economic activity aside from integrating RE.

“In addition to increasing energy supply, we anticipate employing around 500 to 600 workers at the height of construction, partnering with our host local government units (LGUs) for our corporate social responsibility and environment protection programs, and contributing to the overall economic and social progress of the Cagayan Valley region,” she elaborated.

According to Department of Energy (DOE) Director Marissa Cerezo, LSPP-2 is one of the winning bidders under the second Green Energy Auction (GEA-2) that is slated for completion this year.

“It is crucial that they receive all the necessary assistance, and I thank the LGUs and communities of Isabela for extending support to this project…The government needs more private investors, like PGEC and BKS, to invest in and develop RE facilities because of our ever-growing demand for power,” Cerezo said.

The DOE previously granted LSPP a certificate of energy project of national significance (CEPNS) to help expedite the project’s necessary processing that would move the development forward.

BKS is a subsidiary of Rizal Green Energy Corp. (RGEC), which is a joint venture between PGEC and Japan-based TAISEI Corp.
