Quezon City 4th district Rep. Marvin Rillo is prodding the Philippine National Police (PNP) to quickly get to the bottom of the "horrible crime" in Boracay involving the death of 23-year-old Slovakian tourist Michaela Mickova.
“We are counting on the authorities to swiftly apprehend the individuals responsible for this horrible crime,” Rillo said in a statement Sunday, March 16.
“Every effort must be made to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure they are held accountable," he said.
According to Rillo, the shocking discovery of Mickova's lifeless body "is primarily a law enforcement issue".
“The best way to deter future crimes is to show that those who commit such acts are quickly arrested and prosecuted," said the vice chairman of the House Committee on Tourism.
Mickova was discovered inside an abandoned chapel of Zone 3 in Barangay Balabag in Malay town at around 2 p.m. on March 12--two days after she was reported missing by a Filipina friend.
The foreigner reportedly went to Boracay to attend a Filipina friend’s wedding. The body was already in the state of decomposition.
“There is a clear lesson here—local governments, resort operators, and law enforcement must maintain their vigilance when it comes to the safety of tourists,” Rillo said.
According to the Department of Tourism (DOT), a total of 1,083,402 foreign visitors arrived in the Philippines in the first two months of 2025.
Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, is renowned as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.
Rillo extended his heartfelt condolences to Mickova’s family and loved ones, stating, “Her loved ones deserve justice.”
