Fire volunteers struggle for support amid recent blazes in Metro Manila

Several fire volunteers in Metro Manila are reportedly facing significant challenges in securing the support they need after battling fires.

Ang Bumbero ng Pilipinas (ABP) has expressed concern over the lack of adequate support for firefighters, despite the risks they face daily.

In one such incident, a fire broke out in a warehouse in Tondo, Manila, in 2024, leaving 18 firefighters injured.

According to them, fire volunteers often find themselves with little help from the system they work to protect.

Jose Antonio "Ka Pep" Goitia, the First Nominee of Ang Bumbero ng Pilipinas (ABP), criticized the insufficient assistance provided to firefighters who suffer injuries while safeguarding the public.

He pointed out that many firefighters are underpaid, underinsured, and left to bear the financial burden of medical expenses themselves after an injury.

“The hazard pay they receive is far too low given the dangers they face every day. When they get hurt, they are often left to fend for themselves,” Goitia said.

He emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, arguing that firefighters, often hailed as heroes, should be treated as such—both during their service and after they are injured.

Goitia called for the creation of a Firefighters' Protection and Welfare Fund, which would provide crucial support such as medical care, hospitalization benefits, financial assistance, and disability coverage for injured firefighters.

Goitia stressed the importance of equipping firefighters with proper gear and ensuring they receive continuous training to reduce the risk of injury and enhance their safety on the job.

“It’s not just about caring for them after they’re hurt; it’s about taking proactive steps to ensure their protection in the first place. We need to ensure they have the best possible equipment and that their training is always up to date.”
