Ex-governor defends Boracay after murder of Slovakian tourist

ILOILO CITY— Former Aklan Gov. Florencio “Joeben” Miraflores defended Boracay Island as the country’s premier beach destination following the murder of a Slovakian tourist in the resort-island.

“The isolated incident does not change the fact that our island is still the best and safest beach destination,” said Miraflores in a statement.

The victim Michaela Mickova was found dead in an abandoned chapel on March 12. The 23-year-old who went to Boracay to attend a friend’s wedding was initially declared missing on March 10.

Miraflores urged the people of Boracay and the rest of Aklan to work together.

“It has and will always start with Boracaynons and all Aklanons,” said Miraflores.

“The warm reception and hospitality to match the island’s stunning beaches and vibrant culture. Let’s continue to give our guests the unforgettable first impression that they seek in the island and in the Philippines,” Miraflores added.

Many government officials remain mum on the tragic incident, including Miraflores’ son, incumbent Aklan Gov. Joen.

Mayor Frolibar Bautista of Malay town, where Boracay is located, and the Western Visayas regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) have yet to issue statements about the incident.

A staff of DOT-Western Visayas said there is no official statement.
