Thousands of supporters gather in Manila to call for FPRRD's return

Thousands of supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte (FPRRD) gathered at Liwasang Bonifacio, Ermita, Manila, on Saturday for a prayer rally, demanding his return to the Philippines. 

The event, which comes after Duterte's controversial arrest and transfer to The Hague in the Netherlands for hearings with the International Criminal Court (ICC), saw a growing crowd that passionately expressed their desire for his return to the country.

Duterte faces charges before the ICC, which is investigating alleged crimes against humanity during his war on drugs. 

His arrest and subsequent transfer to the Netherlands sparked outrage among his supporters, fueling simultaneous rallies in different parts of the country.

The crowd, estimated at 1,000 by 2:20 p.m. before the event officially began, continued to swell throughout the afternoon, with reports indicating that it could grow into the thousands as the rally progressed. 

Supporters, dressed in red and green, waved banners calling for justice, unity, and peace amid ongoing political and social challenges in the Philippines.

The rally, organized by the King of Jesus Christ (KOJC) ministry, featured a lyre band and dance performances, entertaining the attendees while maintaining the focus on the core message.

Former Duterte administration officials and several senatorial candidates under Duterte’s slate were present, with Honeylet Avancena and Veronica "Kitty" Duterte expected to make an appearance later in the day.

The Manila Police District (MPD), including 50 personnel from the Ermita Police Station (PS-5), maintained a visible security presence to ensure peace and order during the event. 

Drones were also deployed to monitor the crowd and surrounding areas for safety.

Traffic in the area was heavily impacted, with delays reported from Quiapo to Taft Avenue, causing a congestion throughout the afternoon.

At 3 p.m., MPD said the program officially began, with more than 2,000 in the crowd calling for Duterte's return.
