Solon praises Torre's 'maximum tolerance' of Kitty, Honeylet

Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin praised the brand of "maximum tolerance" displayed by Police Major General Nicolas Torre III toward the relatives and supporters of Rodrigo Duterte when the ex-president was arrested last March 11 on orders of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In an online press conference Friday, March 14, Garin explained why she thought Torre--the acting director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)--handled the situation perfectly.

"Naiintidihan natin yung kanilang maximum tolerance. So nandun din yung emosyon. Pag medyo patulan mo kasi yun, iibahin nanaman yung interpretation (We understand their brand of maximum tolerance. So the emotion was there. If you respond to that with the same emotion, there will be a different interpretation of it)," she said.

On Tuesday morning, members of the International Police (Interpol) served an arrest warrant against Duterte in Manila. The former leader is facing a charge of crimes against humanity in connection with his bloody war on drugs.

A video posted on social media showed Veronica "Kitty" Duterte and Honeylet Avanceña--the ex-president's daughter and partner, respectively--fiercely protecting their embattled loved one from the local law enforcers led by Torre who wanted to serve the ICC warrant.

Torre would later reveal that Kitty cursed at him, while Avanceña attacked one of the female police escorts by hitting her head with a mobile phone.

The ex-president--through Torre's insistence--was eventually loaded onto a Gulfstream G550 aircraft at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City and then flown to The Hague, where the ICC is located.

Garin went on to advise Duterte's family and friends to simply focus on the legal situation.

"What's best now...is for the Duterte family to help their father prepare their legal defense. Yung mga abugado nila dapat preparado. Ano ba yung mga impormasyon na kailangan? (Their lawyers must be prepared. What information do they need?)

"Because the best support that the Duterte supporters can give to the former president is to help provide evidence to counter the allegations," she pointed out.
