Paralympians Mangliwan, Asusano lead PH medal haul in Indian tourney

Para wheelchair racer Mangliwan shone the brightest at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as he collected four medals including two golds in men’s 400m and 800m (T52,T53,T54) events.

The 45-year-old Kalinga native snared his silver and bronze in men’s 1,500m and 100m, respectively.

On the other hand, Asusano cruised to a statement victory and completed a golden treble after ruling the women’s javelin throw (F53,F54,F56), discus throw (F54), and shot put (F54).

It was a spectacular performance reminiscent of her Paralympics campaign where she tallied her personal best but fell short at fourth in the javelin throw (F54) event.

Delivering silvers for the Nationals were Rosalie Torrefiel (women’s discus throw, F11), Cyril Ongcoy (men’s 1500m, T11,T12), Arvie Areglado (men’s 100m, T47), Jolan Camacho (men’s long jump, T12), and Marites Burce (women’s discus throw, F54), who also won bronze in shot put (F5).

Bronze winners were King James Reyes (men’s 1500m,T46), and Maekel Lita (men’s discus throw, F56,F57).

The Nationals brought home five golds, six silvers and four bronzes in the five-day long tournament that is an integral part of the WPA’s calendar.

Host India stood mightily at the top of the medal standings with 134 medals that include 45 golds, 40 silvers and 49 bronzes.
