GCash moves to disrupt Maya's grip on business payment market

GCash, the country’s dominant e-wallet player, is set to disrupt the business payments landscape with the launch of its own point-of-sale (POS) system, directly challenging Maya's established foothold.

Jong Layug, GCash General Manager of B2B, announced their forthcoming introduction of a payment terminal designed to handle all digital transactions for businesses of all sizes, from small stores to large retail chains.

This move positions GCash to capitalize on the market opportunity outside of Metro Manila, where Layug believes a large segment of businesses remains underserved, despite Maya's presence in key sectors.

The GCash POS system may offer both traditional terminal and mobile POS options, Layug said.

While acknowledging Maya's current market share, Layug emphasized GCash's strength in the e-wallet space and its commitment to expanding its B2B offerings.

This strategic expansion comes on the heels of GCash's rapid growth, including a doubled valuation to $5 billion last year.

In a recent move to broaden its scope, GCash also launched GJobs, an in-app job marketplace.

GJobs features a wide range of employment opportunities, from white-collar positions like accounting and customer service to blue-collar roles such as kitchen helpers, and baristas.
