House Assistant Majority Leader Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre refuted the claim of Veronica "Kitty" Duterte that what happened to her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte was a case of "kidnapping".
Acidre said that the elder Duterte's arrest by the International Police (Interpol) wasn't done in an underhanded way.
“Hindi ko talaga alam kung bakit masasabi nating kidnapping. Ngayon lang ako nagkaron ng kidnapping na may blow-by-blow account. Online streaming pa, di ba? Kung kidnapping yun, ewan ko na lang,” Acidre told reporters in a press conference Wednesday, March 12.
(I really don't know why we're calling it kidnapping. It's only now that I saw a kidnapping with a blow-by-blow account. There was even online streaming, right? If that was kidnapping then I don't know anymore.)
After serving the warrant of arrest, elements of the Interpol loaded Duterte and a few companions inside a plane, which then flew them to The Hague in the Netherlands, the base of the ICC. Duterte is facing a charge of crimes against humanity before the ICC.
In a social media post Tuesday, Kitty described the Gulfstream G550 aircraft used to transport the ex-president as the plane that was used to "kidnap" her father.
Acidre pointed out that the victims of the bloody drug war of the previous Duterte administration never had the privilege of due process or livestreaming their ordeal.
"Ang dami nilang sinasabi kasi, katulad ng sinabi ‘di naman nila maharap ‘yung mga victims direkta. Mabuti nga ngayon may livestream pa sila. Yung mga napatay dati, katok lang patay na kaagad,” he added.
(They're talking too much, but at the same time they can't address the victims directly. It's good that they have livestream now. The victims of Tokhang were just killed outright.)
Acidre further noted that the Philippine Supreme Court (SC) has already ruled that the country remains bound by ICC obligations for cases initiated before the withdrawal. “If I may add, I think the restriction of the ICC despite our withdrawal from the Rome Statute has been affirmed already by the [SC]."
He underscored that the arrest was properly documented and followed international protocols.
“Nakita naman natin. Nandun yung warrant, was served. Binasa yung Miranda rights (We saw what happened. The warrant was there and was served. The Miranda rights were read). And then he was taken in custody, and then proper medical attention was given. And then the country is duty-bound to deliver him to the Interpol who in turn will deliver the former president to The Hague,” Acidre noted.
It was March 2018 when then-president Duterte ordered the withdrawal of the Philippines from the Rome Statute, which created the ICC.
The crime against humanity charge was filed against Duterte in 2017.
