PSA warns of sharp rise in national ID scams, urges public vigilance

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has warned against escalating National ID scams, urging the public to remain vigilant as fraudsters employ various tactics to steal personal information.

In an advisory, PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa said the agency observed a surge in phishing attempts through text messages, social media, and messaging applications using the National ID.

Mapa, who is also the National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, said that the agency is already aware of fraudulent activities involving fake websites, video calls, and offers to assist with National ID registration, printing, and data updates.

PSA Assistant Secretary Rosalinda P. Bautista, Deputy National Statistician of the PhilSys Registry Office, added that the public should refrain from providing personal information to suspicious sources and report incidents to the PSA.

Mapa noted that data privacy and security remain top priorities for the PSA, and the agency will never request personal information through social media or messaging platforms.

He emphasized that these fraudulent acts are illegal and punishable under Republic Act (RA) No. 11055.

The PSA reported that these scams often involve phishing for personal details under the guise of assisting with National ID registration, printing, correcting errors, or downloading digital IDs.

Scammers frequently use website links that mimic the official National ID website, enticing individuals to enter their personal information. In some cases, fraudsters conduct video calls and request payments.

Under RA 11055, individuals who collect or use personal data without authorization face imprisonment of six to 10 years and fines ranging from ₱3 million to ₱5 million. Similar penalties apply to those who willingly share their personal information.

Earning financial profit from such activities doubles the penalty.

The PSA is encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities through email at [email protected], via Facebook message at www.facebook.com/PSAPhilSysOfficial, by calling Hotline 1388, or by visiting the nearest registration center.
