Mabilog: Duterte arrest signals nation’s healing

ILOILO CITY — Former Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog here said the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court is the beginning of the country’s healing from the bloody war on drugs.

“I believe this is not only a moment for justice to be served, but a moment for our nation to heal — to confront the truth, to right the wrongs, and to choose love, compassion, and unity over hate and division,” said Mabilog.

“I pause not to celebrate, but to reflect with a heart full of gratitude to God — for His justice, His mercy, and His unfailing love,” said Mabilog in a statement released on Wednesday, March 12.

During his administration, the former President branded Mabilog as a narco-politician and a protector of a major drug syndicate.

Mabilog and his family sought asylum in the United States in 2017 when Duterte repeatedly threatened to have him killed in public speeches.

“For many years, my family and I have walked through a valley of trials and tears. My beloved wife and children have endured so much—standing beside me with silent strength and courage, though still living in fear for our safety and future,” said Mabilog.

Mabilog returned to the country last September to clear his name by going to congressional hearings on Duterte's drug war and extrajudicial killings.

He said that it was his strong Catholic faith that sustained him.

“Thank you for closing the doors of oppression and fear, and for opening new doors of hope, justice, and healing,” said Mabilog in a post accompanied with a prayer.

“May God bless and heal the Philippines — guiding us all to a future filled with truth, justice, and peace,” Mabilog added.
