Gatchalian to airport officials: Ensure reliable back up power to avoid outages

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Thursday, March 13 called on airport officials to ensure they have sufficient and reliable back up power supply to avoid any disruptions at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Gatchalian made the call following after another set of power outages hit the three terminals of the country’s main gateway on Tuesday, March 11.

“The Department of Transportation and the Manila International Airport Authority must ensure that incidents like the recent power disruptions at NAIA terminals are prevented,” Gatchalian said.

“Authorities must ensure that our airports have reliable back up power supply to prevent needless disruption of airport operations,” he stressed.

Gatchalian pointe dout that power outages happening within the country’s airports cause unnecessary flight delays and major inconvenience ot travelers.

That is why, he said, existing airport facilities particularly those pertaining to power installations, must be thoroughly assessed to determine their operability.

The senator also said authorities should also take into account “the expected surge in demand for electricity ahead of the summer months.”

“Dapat natuto na tayo sa mga nakaraang insidente ng power outage sa ating mga paliparan dahil nagdudulot ito ng matinding perwisyo lalo na sa mga bata, nakatatanda, at may kapansanan (We should have learned from past incidents of power outages at our airports because they cause severe harm, especially to children, the elderly, and the disabled),” he also said.
