This came as the former chief executive was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, under a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) on crimes against humanity.
He was sent to The Hague, Netherlands on Tuesday night to await trial there before the ICC.
The Vice President herself is on the way to The Hague to help her father.
In a statement, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) confirmed that the official flew to Amsterdam, which is less than an hour away from The Hague.
Another statement on the same day also said Duterte will no longer participate in the Araw ng Dabaw festivities.
“In light of recent developments, the Vice President will no longer be participating in the Araw ng Dabaw festivities scheduled for March 16 and 17.”
The Vice President was scheduled to attend this year’s 88th Araw ng Dabaw festivities—the Araw ng Dabaw Parade and a visit to the Davao City Museum.
In an interview with the media on Tuesday night shortly before her father’s chartered flight left Manila, Duterte emphasized that her focus is to bring him home.
“Hindi pa yan ‘yung iniisip natin ngayon (We aren’t thinking about that now),” she answered when asked about running for the presidency in 2028.
Her father earlier claimed that his arrest will catapult the Vice President to Malacañang if she decides to run in the next presidential elections.
But she stressed that her focus was not on politics in the meantime as she wants to find a way to bring the former president back to the country.
“Iyan lang muna ‘yung asikasuhin natin sa ngayon. And of course, ‘yung pangangampanya ng nine candidates ng PDP Laban (That’s all we’re going to do now. And of course, campaign for the nine candidates of PDP Laban),” she said.
