Slovenia supports PH bid for UN Security Council seat, affirms solidarity in West PH Sea

The Philippines has the support of Slovenia in its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and its 2016 arbitral tribunal win that invalidated China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea.

“We are member of — non-permanent member of the Security Council, strongly committed to international law, to UN Charter, to human rights,” Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said on Tuesday, March 11, after her bilateral meeting with Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo.
 

“And we share those values together with the Philippines, and we also are fully supportive of the candidacy of the Philippines to the Security Council in the near future,” she added.
 

The Philippines is seeking a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for 2027-2028, citing its peace-building and counter-terrorism efforts.
 

In his speech, Manalo expressed his gratitude to Fajon, who conveyed her country’s “full solidarity” with the Philippines on the South China Sea issue.
 

“Minister Fajon and I tackled the issue of the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea, emphasizing the importance of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region,” the DFA chief said.
 

“I thank the Foreign Minister for expressing solidarity with the Philippines when it comes to the security and the observance of international law in the South China Sea, with the Minister pointing out its commitment to international law and the UNCLOS,” he added, referring to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
 

He stressed that the Philippines “is fully committed in defending its sovereignty and sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the South China Sea” and at the same time, engaging China to resolve the dispute “through dialogue and diplomacy.”
 

Fajon, in her speech, also expressed concerns over the “disturbing” actions in the resource-rich region in recent years.
 

“And in this regard, I would like to express, as the Secretary mentioned, our full solidarity with the Philippines over the continuing incidents in the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone,” she said.
 

“Dangerous maneuvers in this maritime area, which we have witnessed in recent years, are disturbing and run contrary to UNCLOS. For Slovenia, respect of international law, including UNCLOS, as well for the International Arbiter Awards, is of paramount importance. And we speak from our own experience,” she added.
 

The Philippines won its Arbitral Tribunal case under UNCLOS in 2016 but China has rejected the ruling.
 

“We welcome Slovenia’s support for the 2016 Arbitral Award, which underscores our mutual commitment to a rules-based international order that is governed by international law,” Manalo said.
 

Fajon’s visit to Manila is the first ever of a foreign minister of Slovenia and Manalo described it as “a milestone in our 31 years of diplomatic relations.”
 

The two officials’ discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key sectors, especially trade and investment, and to build on the results of the inaugural Philippines-Slovenia Political Consultations held on Feb. 5 in Ljubljana.
