'Awang-awa ako': Imee Marcos recalls her father in Duterte's arrest
By Dhel Nazario
Senator Imee Marcos said on Tuesday, March 11, that she was shocked and was in disbelief after she found out about former President Rodrigo Duterte's arrest for crimes against humanity.

In an interview, she said that she feels sorry for Duterte and even mentioned his father, the late former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and former Presidents Joseph Estrada as well as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
"Naawa ako sa tatay ko noong 1986. Naawa din ako sa mga sunod-sunod na Pangulo, kay Erap, kay GMA. Gulo lang ang dulot nito. Hindi na tayo natuto (I felt sorry for my father in 1986. I also felt sorry for the successive Presidents, for Erap and GMA. All this has brought is chaos. We haven’t learned anything)," she said.
The senator said that the repeated cycle of political conflict is of no benefit to the country and its citizens.
"Gumanda ba ang buhay natin dahil sa pamumulitika? Umasenso ba ang ating bansa?...Sa lahat mga nakakahiyang yugto sa ating politika, gantihan nang gantihan, awayan ng awayan, yumaman ba? Nabusog ba? Sumaya ba ang taong bayan? Yun na lamang ang tanong ko (Has our lives improved because of politics? Has our country progressed?... In all the embarrassing moments in our politics, filled with retaliation and constant fighting, have we gotten richer? Have we been satisfied? Has the public found happiness? That's all I want to ask)," she said.
"Nagulat ako...Awang-awa nga ako. Kasi matanda na diba? Parang sa tatay ko, anong nangyari? Ganon din, nakakaawa din (I was shocked... I really felt sorry for him. He's already old, right? It's like with my dad, what happened? It's just as sad)," she added.
Marcos refused to comment until such time that she's updated on the actual situation but stated that she has received a copy of the arrest warrant but she has not yet verified whether it's legitimate or not.
Duterte was placed under the custody of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday, March 11, after he was served a warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, following his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from Hong Kong.
