As Ramadan starts, Banac optimistic of peaceful, honest elections in BARMM

As the holy month of Ramadan starts, the commander of the police forces in Western Mindanao has expressed optimism that the midterm elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM) in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) would be peaceful and orderly.

But more than the expression of hope is the aggressive implementation of security measures to contain violence and to deny any group or individual the opportunity to sabotage or influence the result of the elections, according to Police Lt. Gen. Bernard Banac, commander of the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao.

“The months ahead ushering in the elections come at a most opportune and providential time as it extends through the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is on that high note that the Area Police Command- Western Mindanao joins our Muslim brothers and sisters in BARMM on this important Islamic holiday,” said Banac.

Part of the security measures, according to Banac, is the continuous coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). 

On Feb 24, no less than PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil presided over a top level security cluster committee meeting among the PNP, AFP and PCG units in the Bangsamoro region.

The security conference was aimed at bolstering government assurance of peaceful and orderly electoral exercise in BARMM. 

“With a stronger collaboration forged among the police, military, coast guard, local government and civil society stakeholders, we can confidently say that we shall effectively carry on the intent and outlook of President Marcos for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and its people,” said Banac. 

Earlier, non-government organization Conflict Climate Action (CCA) warned of bloody elections in some parts of BARMM over the presence of armed men and guns in the region.

The group is calling for the impartial gun ban implementation and more peace-building efforts among warring clans in BARMM.
