Phivolcs cautions public: Taal Volcano hazards remain despite quiet activity

Despite the absence of volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reiterated its warning against entry into Taal Volcano’s Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to potential hazards.

 

In its advisory on Sunday, Feb. 9, Phivolcs reported that there were “zero volcanic earthquakes” recorded within the last day and the past two weeks. 

 

However, the agency reminded the public that “possible hazards that can occur” include “steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, [and] lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.”

 

Phivolcs emphasized that certain activities around the volcano should be strictly prohibited.

 

“Entry into Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ), especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, and occupancy and boating on Taal Lake [should not be allowed],” the state seismology agency stated.

 

Phivolcs also warned against “flying any aircraft close to the volcano” due to potential airborne hazards.

 

It noted that Taal Volcano, located in the province of Batangas, remains under close monitoring, and authorities urge residents and local officials to remain vigilant.
