24-hour checkpoints, more troops in high-risk areas as PNP steps up election security

The Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered all police commanders across the country to ensure a 24-hour conduct of checkpoint and strategic deployment of policemen in high-risk areas as the campaign period for national candidates and party-list groups begins on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said the conduct of checkpoint and strategic deployment will complement the continuous campaign against private armed groups, wanted criminals and loose firearms.

He said the security measures will also be reinforced with the deployment of additional manpower in identified election areas of concern.

“As we approach the midterm elections, the PNP remains steadfast in its duty to uphold peace and security. Any actions that incite violence, intimidate voters, or undermine the electoral process will be met with the full force of the law,” said Marbil.

Marbil said the intensified security measures is part of the comprehensive 100-day security plan for the midterm elections on May 12 which is aimed at addressing potential threats, dismantling private armed groups, and maintaining order before, during, and after the elections.

Marbil, whose tour of duty as PNP chief was extended for four months, also stressed the integrity of the elections as a paramount priority, as he assured the public that the PNP will remain impartial and proactive in preventing any form of political violence.

“No political ambition should compromise public safety. The PNP will remain vigilant in ensuring that the elections are conducted peacefully, and those who attempt to disrupt this process through violence or intimidation will be held accountable,” said Marbil.

Marbil also called on the public to be actively involved in maintaining the integrity of the elections by reporting any suspicious activities or election-related violations through dedicated hotlines and social media channels.

While election security is a top priority, Marbil, however, assured that the PNP’s broader mandate to combat crime, illegal drugs, and other threats to public safety will continue without letup.

“Let me be clear: while we are fully committed to ensuring the success of the elections, the safety of our people remains our top priority. Our fight against crime, illegal drugs, and terrorism will continue with the same intensity and determination,” he said.
