'Ang 'tapang' naman ni koya': Cendaña clowns Dela Rosa in retort to insult over his looks

Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña chided Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa on Saturday, Feb. 8 after the latter poked fun at his physical condition and threatened to punch him in the face.

Cendaña showed zero intimidation from Dela Rosa's remarks and even resorted to clowning the former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.

"Mhie, sasapakin daw ako ng isang senador? (A senator is going to punch me?)" the congressman said in a statement, referring to Dela Rosa, a Duterte family ally.

"Ang 'tapang' naman ni koya. Sana ganyan din siya katapang laban sa China sa WPS (West Philippine Sea) at sa pagharap sa ICC (International Criminal Court)," Cendaña, a supporter of the recent impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, said.

(Big brother is so "brave". I hope he shows the same courage against China in the WPS and in facing the ICC.)

"O baka naman iiyak na naman siya ng crocodile tears at kakaripas ng takbo, gaya ng pagtakbo niya noon sa hawak niyang paputok?" he further asked.

(Or maybe he will once again cry crocodile tears and scamper, like how he ran back then when he was holding a firecracker.)

Cendaña was alluding to the time last year when Dela Rosa cried in front of media following Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri's removal from his post.

He was also calling back to a viral video almost nine years ago when then-PNP chief Dela Rosa ran in the opposite direction of a large firecracker that suddenly emitted smoke.

Stroke survivor

In a statement shared by Akbayan to House reporters, several heath and medical advocates have castigated Dela Rosa over his "cruel insults" toward Cendaña.

"Senator Bato dela Rosa’s attack on Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña is not just cruel—it is an insult to the dignity of persons with health conditions," they said.

"Had he taken even a moment to do his research, he would have known that Rep. Perci is a stroke survivor. Instead, his appalling remarks reinforce harmful stereotypes and deepen the discrimination that people with various health concerns endure every day," they noted.

"We call on the Senate and its members to hold Dela Rosa accountable. Our lawmakers must champion, not ridicule, the rights and dignity of all Filipinos—especially those living with disabilities," the advocates said.

"More than that, Dela Rosa must issue an immediate and unequivocal public apology. His words were not just offensive, they were demeaning and harmful. If he has even a shred of decency, he must take full responsibility, apologize directly to Rep. Perci and the broader disability community, and commit to learning from his mistake," they added.
