One of the congressmen who signed the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte called her out for making the plea "God save the Philippines," which he called "deeply ironic".
Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña, says that if there is anyone who should be saying such a line, it must be the Filipino people who are suffering from Duterte herself as well as her family's alleged "corruption, incompetence, and impunity".
"Vice President Sara Duterte's plea of 'God save the Philippines' is deeply ironic coming from someone who has consistently failed to save public funds from misuse, protect education from corruption, and defend our fisherfolk and frontliners from China’s harassment in the West Philippine Sea," Cendaña said in a statement Friday, Feb. 7.
The lawmaker's statement came after Duterte held a press briefing two days after the House of Representatives impeached her due to various grounds, including betrayal of public trust, abuse of power, making death threats, alleged misuse of public funds, involvement in drug war killings and the Davao Death Squad and inciting sedition, among others.
"God save the Philippines" was the only response that the Vice President had with regards to her impeachment as she said she already placed her trust in people who are standing by her.
Cendaña said that if Duterte was really seeking salvation, "she should start with truth and accountability".
"Instead of invoking God to evade responsibility, she must answer for the millions in confidential funds, her failure to stand against China’s aggression, and her lack of compassion for Filipinos in crisis," the party-list solon added.
