As political leaders woo voters to elect their candidates, former president Rodrigo Duterte has hit back at President Marcos, saying the latter's government has fallen short, especially in addressing the country's food crisis.

Duterte said this as he led the proclamation rally for PDP-Laban's senatorial candidates in San Juan City on Thursday evening, Feb. 13.
In his speech, the former president acknowledged that the Marcos administration had done better than his government in some aspects but this did not justify his shortcomings.
"Hindi ko mai-compare kasi pwede kong sabihin mas mabuti siya ngayon kesa aking panahon. I can even concede na ganoon ang nangyari (I cannot compare because I can say that it's better today than during my time. I can even conceded that that is what happened)," he said.
"[But] it would not be a good reason for you to solve the problem just because you're doing right— more rights than the wrong ones that the other guy had committed in the past," he added.
Duterte particularly highlighted the current administration's shortcomings in addressing the rising prices of goods.
"Marami tayong problema (We have a lot of problems). I think the Marcos government has fallen short of expectations," he said.
"You keep on promising people so many things pero itong pagkain talagang unahin nila. Pinaka-basic talaga. Medyo hirap sila, ewan ko kung bakit (they should prioritize the food issue. That's the most basic. They're having a hard time and I don't know why)," he added.
According to Duterte, he could empathize with Marcos but claimed that the latter was "taking his time" to resolve the issue.
"Maraming issues. Hindi ko naman sinasabi na kaya natin kung tayo ang nandyan sa Malacañan. It's not easy (There are plenty of issues but I'm not saying that we could handle them if we were in Malacañan. It's not easy)," he said.
"I have been there. But the guy (Marcos) is simply taking his time to come up with a solution to the problem," he added.
"At least man lang yung pagkain sana mahanapan nila ng paraan. Talagang tumataas, eh (At least I hope they're able to resolve the food problem. The price is really shooting up)," he continued.
With this, Duterte offered his senatorial bets as alternatives to Marcos' candidates, ensuring the public that they would call out the administration if need be.
"You have to have a Senate na kailangan nandiyan (who is there) even to persuade any sitting government to do what is right," he said.
