Abalos vows to help tricycle drivers get long-delayed fuel subsidy

Senatorial aspirant Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. has committed to help officers and members of tricycle operators and drivers’ association (TODA) in Metro Manila who have been complaining of the years of delay in the release of their fuel subsidy.

Abalos heard the concerns raised by the tricycle operators and drivers about the difficulties in getting their fuel subsidy from the national government during a recent meeting with the United Federations of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (UF-TODA) at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

The group, led by Ace Sevilla, said it has been raising these concerns with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) but up to now, has remained unaddressed.

What the group wants, according to Sevilla, is to course the fuel subsidy to the local government units (LGUs) since the current release of the subsidy is through e-wallets like GCash.

Abalos, who is running in May 12 elections under the administration’s Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, said he understands the concerns of the tricycle drivers and operators as he worked with them for several years, including as TODA legal counsel especially in Mandaluyong City.

And based on his continuous interactions with the TODA members, Abalos said he was aware that not all tricycle drivers have smart phones and therefore, some of them have no GCash account.

In the meeting, Abalos vowed to assist the TODA members in ensuring that they will finally receive the fuel subsidy that they deserve by raising the concerns to the government agencies concerned.

The fuel subsidy was initiated by the national government to assist them in coping with the continuous rise in the price of petroleum products.

While operators and drivers of jeepneys and other public transport already received the subsidy, some TODA members have yet to receive it due to the e-wallet challenges.

Abalos is a former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman, and Mandaluyong City mayor.
