Senator Mark Villar has underscored the urgent need for increased investment in agricultural infrastructure, particularly cold storage facilities, to enhance food security and reduce post-harvest losses in the Philippines. In response to rising food prices and supply chain inefficiencies, Villar is advocating for policies that will modernize the country’s agricultural sector and empower Filipino farmers.

“As a nation heavily reliant on agriculture, we must ensure that our farmers have the necessary infrastructure to store, transport, and market their produce efficiently. Investing in cold storage facilities is a critical step in reducing food wastage, stabilizing prices, and ensuring a steady food supply for all Filipinos,” Villar said.

Strengthening the Agricultural Value Chain

The senator emphasized that post-harvest losses account for a significant percentage of food waste in the country, particularly in perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat. Due to inadequate storage facilities, farmers often face limited options, forcing them to sell their produce at lower prices or suffer financial losses from spoilage.

Cold storage infrastructure can:

• Extend Shelf Life and Reduce Spoilage – Proper temperature-controlled storage will help preserve food quality and prevent wastage.

• Stabilize Food Prices – Farmers can store produce during peak harvest seasons and release them gradually, preventing price fluctuations.

• Strengthen Food Security – Ensuring a steady food supply throughout the year will help mitigate the impacts of climate change, typhoons, and other disruptions.

Public-Private Collaboration for Agricultural Modernization

To address these challenges, Villar is pushing for stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector in developing sustainable agricultural infrastructure. He proposes incentives for businesses investing in cold storage and supply chain facilities, along with increased budget allocations for farm-to-market roads, irrigation, and processing centers.

“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. By prioritizing investments in cold storage, logistics, and transportation, we can uplift our farmers, ensure food security, and promote economic resilience,” Villar added.

The senator also highlighted the need for smart agriculture technologies, renewable energy solutions for off-grid farming communities, and better financial support for smallholder farmers.

As part of his commitment to agricultural development, Villar plans to introduce legislative measures that will accelerate infrastructure development and provide long-term solutions to food security challenges in the country.
