In the WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2025, the 18-year-old Cruz barged into the U-19 girls’ singles finals and battled South Korea's Heo Yerim, with the latter coming out with a 11-3, 11-4, 12-10 win to take the gold medal.
Before the finals, Cruz toppled Egypt’s Mariam Younes (11-5, 11-5, 11-3) in Round of 16 then frustrated Korean Choi Seoyeon (4-11, 11-5, 15-13, 11-5) in the quarterfinal.
Similar to her quarters triumph, Cruz turned the tides and scored a 9-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Germany-based Japanese Koharu Itagaki in the semifinal.
With her runner-up finish, Cruz zoomed to No. 19 in the ITTF girls rankings.
Meanwhile in the WTT Youth Contender, Cruz and her Korean partner Choi Jiwook were on the cusp of clinching the mixed doubles crown but fell badly in the fifth game, succumbing to Tunisia’s Wassim Essid and India’s Sayali Wani in the final, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-13.
Getting off to a strong start, Cruz and Jiwook smashed their way to an 8-0 blitz before Essid and Wani rose from the dust with their 13-3 fightback to steal the title.
