The Senate has adopted a resolution commemorating the life and legacy of veteran actress Gloria Romero, who passed away on January 25 at 91 years old.
Senator Grace Poe, sponsor of Senate Resolution No. 1287, described Romero as a “cultural institution” when the measure was approved by the Senate on Monday, February 3.
“Gloria Romero was not just an actress; she’s the actress. She was a cultural institution, an artist whose contribution to the entertainment industry has left an indelible mark on our nation's cultural identity,” Poe said.
Romero was a “trailblazer” as she helped “define the golden age of Philippine cinema,” according to Poe.
“Her life and work reminded us that genuine artistry is tireless and her sheer dedication serves as a model for all of us to emulate,” Poe said.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada said Romero’s death is a sad time for the Philippine entertainment industry “because we lost a respected artist, a pillar, and one of the oldest living Filipino actors and one of the last surviving stars from the first Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.”
“(She) may have left us but her craft, body of work, and timeless beauty will remain as an indelible mark in our hearts. Your contributions and legacy to the Philippine entertainment industry will forever be honored,” Estrada said.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, in her privilege speech also hailed Romero as someone who was “born to captivate and inspire.”
“Gloria graced the silver screen with her ethereal beauty, timeless elegance, and unmatched talent. Her performances were not merely portrayals but heartfelt connections with her audiences,” Hontiveros said.
As a trailblazer, Romero paved the way for generations of actors, and generations of women. “Her career, spanning over seven decades, is a testament not only to her passion and dedication to her craft but also to her can-do spirit as a woman ahead of her time,” the senator further pointed out.
Romero is hailed as the “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” having won various acting awards throughout her 70-year career in showbiz.
Among her memorable performances in film include “Magnifico,” “Dalagang Ilocana,” “Tarima,” “Tanging Yaman,” and “Rainbow's Sunset.”
In April 2024, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) named her among its Lifetime Achievement Honorees.
