Senior Deputy Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos quoted the great Mahatma Gandhi of India in his speech Monday, Feb. 3 as he inspired House of Representatives employees to work with their heads held high.
Rep. Marcos, son of the President Marcos, was the guest speaker during the flag-raising ceremony Monday. It was the final flag ceremony in the House until the resumption of sessions on June 2.
"Today, as we stand together under the symbol of our nation, and as we start another busy week, let us take a moment to reflect on what it truly means to be public servants," the presidential son said.
"In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," he said.
"These simple, yet profound words remind us that our chosen path is not on a privilege but a purpose. More than just a job, public service is a lifelong commitment," noted Rep. Marcos.
"It is about dedicating ourselves to something bigger, something bigger than ourselves," he underscored.
Rep. Marcos further said: "In our respective spheres of influence, we measure success not by what we achieve for ourselves, but by the positive impact we make on the lives of others. It is not always easy."
He said that would be "days of great challenge, times of doubt and moments when the weight of responsibility can feel overwhelming".
"But it is in these moments that we are called to be stronger, to remain steadfast and to remember why we are here, to make a difference, to ensure that every Filipino, regardless of status or circumstance, can enjoy a better and more fulfilling life," said the reelectionist.
Gandhi is often referred to as the Father of the Nation by his fellow Indians. He was named "Man of the Year" by Time Magazine in 1930.
Known for leading the successful, nonviolent campaign for India's independence from British rule, Gandhi inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
"Every bill we propose, every law we pass, every reform we champion must be grounded in the principle that governance exists not to rule, but to uplift. Public service is a constant balancing act between tradition in progress, authority and accountability," Rep. Marcos said.
"My dear colleagues in the House of Representatives, as we raise our flag today may it serve as a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry to rise above personal ambition and dedicate our time, energy and purpose to the service of our nation," he said.
The Ilocano further said: "Let us immerse ourselves in the work that truly matters for elusing ourselves in service we discover the best version of who we are, stewards of the people, agents of meaningful change and bearers of hope for generations to come.
"Maraming salamat (Thank you very much), and may we always find our strength in our service to the Filipino people."
The House will go on recess after plenary session Wednesday, Feb. 5.
