A motorcycle rider was hurt while his passenger who was his girlfriend, died from injuries after being hit by an oil tanker in Elliptical Road in Quezon City early Tuesday morning, Feb. 4.
The couple was on their way to Quezon City Memorial Circle from Valenzuela when the accident occurred.
"Nandoon na po kami sa tapat ng circle. Liliko na lang po sana kami. Hindi po nagdahan-dahan 'yung truck sa likod. Nakita naman po. Malayo pa lang po, naka-signal light na ako eh (We were already in front of the circle. We were about to make a turn. The truck behind us wasn't slowing down. I already had my signal light turned on)," the rider said in an interview.
The oil tanker was also coming from Valenzuela and was on its way to make a delivery in Taytay, Rizal.
The driver of the oil tanker claimed that the motorcycle just came out of nowhere, and when he blew his horn multiple times, the rider did not respond, forcing him to drive towards the gutter to avoid an accident.
"Biglang sumulpot siya. Ang tulin. Binusinahan ko na siya nang husto. Tuloy-tuloy pa rin siya. Hindi siya nag-respond. Umiwas ako eh. Tumama pa nga ako sa gutter. Iniwas ko ito (Suddenly he appeared. They were fast. I honked at him hard. He kept going. He didn't respond. I avoided them [and] I even hit the gutter. I dodged my truck)," the oil tanker driver explained.
The relatives of the victim arrived on the scene and identified the victims.
The oil tanker driver is under police custody of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 3 and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, damage to property, at physical injury.
He is also set to undergo inquest proceedings on Tuesday.
