Bato Dela Rosa 'heartbroken' over death of young pilot
Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said he was heartbroken over the death of the young female pilot who died in a chopper crash over the weekend.
The pilot, Julia Flori Monzon Po, 25, is the daughter of aviation mogul Archibald Po.
According to Dela Rosa he and his two security personnel were the passengers of R44 light helicopter. The tragic crash happened after Po dropped the senator off in Baguio City.
“Ayaw ko maiyak ako (I don’t want to cry) but it really breaks my heart…25 years old, very young,” Dela Rosa said during an interview at the Senate, Monday, February 3.
“Na-imagine ko din how I would feel kapag anak ko rin na piloto na babae rin, ganun ang mangyari. Di ko ma-imagine, mahirap tanggapin (I also imagined how I would feel if I happen to have a daughter who is a pilot. I can’t imagine that, it’s hard to accept),” he further said.
According to the senator, their flight towards Baguio City was "very smooth" and they noticed nothing wrong with the helicopter.
"Wala kaming naramdamang anything unusual," he said.
According to Dela Rosa, he only asked to be dropped off in Baguio City because he had another engagement in Binmaley, Pangasinan on the same day. He opted to travel by land from Baguio to Pangasinan.
Dela Rosa explained he asked to be dropped off in Baguio because he didn’t want to sacrifice the safety of the pilot.
“Dahil magsara agad ‘yung clouds dyan sa Baguio. Kaya sabi ko i-drop na lang ako. Pag-drop, uwi na agad siya (Because the clouds in Baguio will drop immediately after. That’s why I asked to be dropped here. After that, she can return immediately),” he said.
Later on, Dela Rosa said he was informed that the chopper could no longer be contacted.
The lawmaker, along with former president Rodrigo Duterte, already visited the wake of the pilot on Sunday night.
Dela Rosa said the pilot’s father is a very close friend of him and the former president.
Asked if he considers it a blessing in disguise, the lawmaker said “yes.”
