Reigning champion National University tries to extend its unbeaten run to four games when it battles University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Saturday, March 1.

After surviving the FEU Lady Tamaraws in a five-set thriller last weekend, the Lady Bulldogs are up for another challenge as they face the UE Lady Warriors at 4 p.m., with the UST-Adamson clash serving as an appetizer in women's play at 2 p.m.
Going perfect in three games early in the season, Sherwin Meneses believes there is still a room for improvement as his wards must avoid getting complacent against the struggling UE side which is yet to win a single game in the tournament.
“Malakas man o nasa bottom man ‘yon kalaban…, UE, La Salle, FEU man ‘yan, lagi naming paghahandaan ‘yan. ‘Di importante kung sino kalaban, ang importante is lalaban mo sila ng maayos,” said Meneses.
Heavy hitter Bella Belen echoed Meneses' statement.
“Kada game naman po ni-treat namin sya equally, like UE, papanoorin namin sila, babalik kami sa drawing board… and hopefully maging pulido kami,” Belen said.
Indeed, UE boasts the likes of Khy Cepada, Nessa Bangayan and Kayce Balingit who are hoping to clinch their first win after the departure of their key players from last year.
NU, meanwhile, has the luxury of having an intact roster, flaunting its veteran hitters in Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Sheena Toring, Vange Alinsug, Erin Pangilinan and Lams Lamina.
Raising the curtain for the women’s double-header is a much-awaited duel of current and rising stars in Angge Poyos and Shaina Nitura, who banner the Golden Tigresses (2-1) and the Adamson Lady Falcons (1-2), respectively.
“Actually nagharap na kami ni Shaina no’ng highschool pa kami sa UAAP. Ini-expect ko talaga na magaling sya and may maraming variations ‘yong mga palo niya,” said Poyos. “Kaya expect namin na maganda magiging laban ng mga teams namin this Saturday.”
Coming from a five-set triumph over rival La Salle, the Espana-based squad also has Regina Jurado, Margaret Altea, Mabeth Hilongo, and Detdet Pepito to lean on.
The Lady Falcons, who made quick work of the Lady Warriors last Wednesday, will bank on Nitura along with fellow potent freshman Frances Mordi, and May Ann Nuique.
