Antique eyes ordinance to identify no build, no dwelling zones

ILOILO CITY – The provincial government of Antique has proposed to identify no build and no dwelling zones.

The Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council during its first quarter meeting chaired by Gov. Rhodora “Dodod” Cadiao urged the Antique Provincial Board to act on legislation that would institutionalize proactive approach for high-risk areas.

The proposed ordinance prohibits the construction of any structure – whether temporary or permanent – in high-risk areas.

The provincial government said it is about time to have an ordinance as natural disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and storm surges have damaged properties and killed or injured residents in the 18 municipalities.

The Antique PDRRMC said landslide-prone areas include mountain communities in the towns of San Remigio, Tibiao, Tobias Fornier, and Valderrama.

High-risk areas for flash flood are low-lying areas in Hamtic, Sibalom, and San Jose de Buenavista towns.

Areas prone to storm surges are the coastal areas in Culasi, Pandan, Libertad, and Sebaste town.
