
A group of Filipino math aces has once again made the country proud following their exceptional performance in the recently concluded International Talent Mathematics Contest (ITMC) in Bangkok, Thailand from Feb. 22 to 25.
Dr. Simon Chua, head of Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which mentored the math-gifted Filipino elementary and high school students, said the Philippine team bagged a total of 71 medals (2 gold, 6 silver, 34 bronze and 29 merit medals) during the 10-nation competition participated by nearly 600 from host Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the Philippines.
Chua explained the ITMC test was divided into 3 sections, composed of 29 problems plus one bonus problem that should be solved in 90 minutes. Electronic devices were not allowed during the examination.
He named the team's two gold medalists as Danica Grizel Nacin of Zambales National High School and Joshua Vaughn Asuncion of Unida Christian Colleges.
The silver medalists are John Terrence Piamonte of Regional Science High School of Region 1; Rohan Joaquin Francisco of Ateneo de Manila University; Aurora Lily Bulatao of Colegio San Agustin Binan; Jorahn Atheistan Lo of Soutgernside Montessori School; Avi Zanoah Asperin of St. Jude Catholic School, and Luis Mateo Gepaya of Davao City National High School.
