PAGASA retires 'Kristine', 7 other cyclone names due to widespread destruction in 2024

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially retired eight tropical cyclone names, including Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, due to their destructive impact on the country last year.
PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel T. Servando announced that the names Aghon, Enteng, Julian, Kristine, Leon, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito will be removed from the agency’s list of domestic names for tropical cyclones within the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
This makes 2024 the year with the highest number of decommissioned names since the current naming system was introduced in 2001.
Under PAGASA’s guidelines, a tropical cyclone name is decommissioned or “retired” if its passage results in the deaths of at least 300 people or causes damage exceeding P1 billion to infrastructure, agriculture, and housing, as confirmed by reports from the Office of the Civil Defense.
However, the State weather bureau pointed out that due to the compounded impacts of successive typhoons in the last quarter of 2024–Nika, Ofel, and Pepito—all cyclones responsible for these widespread effects have also had their names retired.
PAGASA will replace the retired names with Amuyao, Edring, Josefa, Kidul, Lekep, Nanolay, Onos, and Puwok from its reserved list starting Jan. 1, 2028.
