Benitez said these housing units were intended for uniformed personnel but remain unoccupied. “Why don’t we use these abandoned units?” he said. A total of 1,498 units have been constructed at Ciudad Felisa which was completed in 2015.
He plans to send a letter to the National Housing Authority to request the status of units and express this city’s interest in utilizing them as it takes proactive steps to address the growing need for evacuation sites in the event of a major eruption.
In addition to preparing evacuation centers within this city, the city government has been extending a helping hand to neighboring local government units (LGUs) in need.
The Women Friendly Space at the Vista Alegre Regional Evacuation Center in Barangay Vista Alegre and the DRRMO evacuation center in Barangay Taculing are prepared to accommodate evacuees as the city remains committed to providing refuge.
Benitez said they have not signed any formal agreement with other LGUs but remains flexible, ready to assess which areas require the most assistance in times of calamity.
He emphasized the city’s readiness to provide support wherever it is most needed, including sending relief assistance.
“The city is will always open its arms to its neighbors, and we are prepared to assist those who needs us the most. As far as of committing, we will welcome everybody,” Benitez said.
On Feb. 21, the Bacolod City Cooperative and Livelihood Development Office (CCLDO), in collaboration with the Bacolod City Cooperative Development Council (BCCDC), mobilized relief efforts, including food packs and water containers for safe storage in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, hardly hit by the Dec. 9, 2024 eruption.
Benitez highlighted the importance of coordination with other local government units and provincial authorities to ensure a unified, long-term response plan.
He cited the discussion of Kanlaon-affected LGU officials on the possibility of identifying permanent relocation sites for evacuees, as they are running low on funds to continue supporting displaced families.
