Mindanao Container Terminal switches to solar power for daytime operations

Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT), a business unit of Razon-led International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), has shifted its operations during daylight hours to solar power.

The MCT, a key gateway in Northern Mindanao, started sourcing solar power on Feb. 14 under a retail supply contract with PrimeRES Energy Corporation.

This agreement is within the Department of Energy’s (DOE) retail competition and open access (RCOA) framework.

“The Mindanao Container Terminal is a key gateway for the region, and reducing carbon emissions from our operations aligns with ICTSI’s broader environmental objectives,” said MCT president and general manager Aurelio Garcia in a statement.

“This shift to solar power reflects our commitment to sustainability and demonstrates the steps we are taking to lower emissions,” he added.

Operating in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, the MCT plays a key role in the country’s agriculture sector, facilitating exporting products such as bananas and pineapples.

During daylight hours, the terminal will use the solar power generated by PrimeRES’ solar power systems during the day.

To ensure a 24/7 energy supply, the terminal will draw power from the company’s supply portfolio, such as the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

The hybrid solution maximizes MCT’s usage of renewable energy while maintaining operational stability.

PrimeRES Energy Corporation chief operating officer Daniel Arago said the company’s partnership with the terminal exemplifies its commitment to delivering affordable and reliable power solutions that cater to diverse needs.

“We appreciate MCT’s trust and shared vision of providing consumers with environmentally friendly energy solutions at competitive costs,” added Arago.

PrimeRes, a retail electricity supplier, supplies power through electricity sourced from Prime Infra’s renewable energy (RE) portfolio and third-party suppliers.

Partnering with PrimeRes in its solar energy shift will provide MCT with competitive electricity rates and potential cost savings.

ICTSI, through its subsidiary Mindanao International Container Terminal Services Inc. (MICTSI), recently secured a 25-year extension to operate and manage MCT.

As part of its long-term plan to enhance capacity and efficiency, MCT will invest more than $100 million in infrastructure upgrades to increase the terminal’s annual capacity beyond its current 350,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
