Better late than never.
Samar Island sent a representative to the prestigious Miss Universe Philippines 2025 Competition on May 2 for the first time.
Kathreen Kaye Dacanay, 20, is excited to compete in her first national pageant.
"I'm excited to be here and to be surrounded by beautiful women," said Kathreen during the recent presentation of candidates for Miss Universe Philippines.
Kathreen is a full scholar accountancy student who loves speaking, writing, and debating.

She admitted that the competition was quite hectic, but she loved every moment of it.
"Quite hectic, a bit challenging and pressuring but at the same time, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm here to learn, to grow, and have fun," Kathreen said.
Kathreen has joined a local pageant. Prior to MUPH, she was crowned Miss Pintados 2023. Kathreen was also Ambassadress of Goodwill at Philippine Red Cross Leyte Chapter.
Kathreen expressed her gratitude for being surrounded by a talented team led by award-winning makeup artist Noel Flores that will assist her in the MUPH contest.
Asked why she should be the next Miss Universe Philippines, Kathreen said: "This has been a childhood dream of mine. At the end of the day, my advantage is my youth and my experience. When I'm up on that stage, I want to inspire people that they can also achieve their dreams no matter who they are and no matter where they come from."

Kathreen invited the people of Samar Island to support her in her journey to Miss Universe Philippines 2025.
John Rodrigo Minas, the local pageant director for Miss Universe Philippines Samar Island, said Kathreen was selected after she won the pageant, which candidates from the island's three provinces participated in on Feb. 7.
During an interview at Marriott Hotel, John mentioned that it wasn't his plan to become the local pageant director; he initially participated as a sponsor and judge in previous competitions. Then, he was offered the franchise of MUPH Samar Island.
"MUPH is the highest level in terms of pageants here. So I took the challenge. And we have many talented women in Samar who are willing to compete. This is an opportunity for them," said John.
In describing Kathreen, John said: "She has what it takes to represent Samar Island in MUPH. She is smart, beautiful, and a good person. Kathreen can compete at the national level."

Her advice to Kathreen: "Always give her best. This is a national pageant where you will meet different kinds of people. So, focus on her goal. Believe in herself so that she can be an empowered woman."
John also said the people of Samar love pageants. "Would you believe that in the Tacloban pageant, some of their candidates come from Samar Island? And the winner of their pageant came from Samar. We have many potential pageant winners from Samar."
The Customs broker and businessman also revealed training and conducting seminars for future talents in Samar. "Pageants are just the beginning of the wonderful opportunities available for our youth. We will offer free seminars for aspiring models, providing them with the best trainers we can find. These trainers are eager to help, but the youth often lack the opportunity to receive proper training."
