A police officer was injured after being hit by a drag racer who was trying to flee from the scene of an illegal auto racing along Roxas Boulevard in Malate, Manila.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, personnel from the Manila Police District (MPD) Remedios Precinct responded to a report of a drag race causing a disturbance near the corner of Paseo Del Carmen Street.

Upon arrival, officers saw several individuals engaged in high-speed racing while others cheered them on.

As the officers moved to intercept the racers, the suspects attempted to flee in different directions.

One of the suspects, identified as Samer Bagundang, deliberately ran over Patrol Officer Ruel Christian Hernandez, who had cornered him.

Bagundang attempted to escape by speeding off on his Yamaha NMAX motorcycle but lost control and crashed, leading to his arrest.

Hernandez sustained injuries and was rushed to the Chinese General Hospital for treatment.

Despite initial resistance, the other suspects identified as Yasser Taleb, Bernard Figueroa, Zumaydi Sanbutuan, and Larry Nawali were also arrested after attempting to flee on their motorcycles.

The arrested suspects are facing frustrated murder, serious resistance, disobedience to a person in authority, and alarm and scandal charges.

Hernandez is currently under observation in the hospital.
